Pam Bondi for Attorney General!
Washington, Nov 21 (EFE).-
US president-elect Donald Trump on Thursday nominated former Florida attorney general Pam Bondi as his new attorney general pick following the withdrawal of Matt Gaetz from the nominated amid intense scrutiny of sexual misconduct allegations.
“Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on Violent Criminals, and made the streets safe for Florida Families,” Trump wrote on his social network, Truth Social.
The New York magnate recalled that, as the first female attorney general of Florida, a position she held from 2011 to 2019, Bondi “worked to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs, and reduce the tragedy of Fentanyl Overdose Deaths, which have destroyed many families” across the US.
“She did such an incredible job that I asked her to serve on our Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during my first Term – We saved many lives!” he added.
Trump claimed that “for too long” the justice department has been weaponized against him or other Republicans, which he said he will end.
“Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough,” he said of his new pick, whom he assured “will do a terrific job as attorney general.”
Gaetz, who until last week was a congressman, withdrew from his nomination as attorney general on Thursday.
He was investigated in the past by the Justice Department over allegations of sex trafficking and obstruction, but ultimately not charged.
In parallel, he was facing another investigation by the House Ethics Committee, which effectively ended last week when he resigned from congress after Trump nominated him.
That same committee was deadlocked in a vote on Wednesday over making public the report on its investigations.
Trump’s future cabinet must be authorized by the Senate. EFE
