Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka was crowned the US Open champion for the first time in her career on Saturday, beating American Jessica Pegula in the final.

With a fabulous display of powerful tennis, world number two Sabalenka overcame Pegula, ranked sixth in the world, 7-5, 7-5 in one hour and 53 minutes.

This is Sabalenka’s second Grand Slam win in 2024 after the Australian Open and her third major title overall, counting the 2023 Australian Open.

The victory was a vindication for her after losing to American Coco Gauff (No. 3) in the final at Flushing Meadows last year. EFE dvp/ics
