New York, Sep 8 (EFE).-

Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner won his first US Open on Sunday, shattering the dream of the American player Taylor Fritz, who was hoping to become the first homegrown men’s champion in 21 years.

Sinner, the world’s top-ranked player and winner of this year’s Australian Open, beat Fritz, ranked 12th, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 15 minutes.

American fans have not celebrated a men’s title at Flushing Meadows since Andy Roddick in 2003.

Sinner’s triumph also served as personal vindication after the recent controversy over a positive doping test at Indian Wells, which was not punished as officials determined it was a mistake by his physiotherapist.

Sinner has won six titles so far this year, all on hard courts, and has now won 12 matches in a row after winning the Cincinnati Masters 1000.

He is the first Italian man to win the US Open, with compatriot Flavia Pennetta taking the women’s title in 2015.

The 23-year-old is leading a new generation of men’s tennis along with Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, 21, with whom he shared this year’s four Grand Slam tournaments after the Spaniard won Roland Garros and Wimbledon. EFE
