Montevideo, Sep 2 (EFE).-

Luis Suarez, Uruguay’s top scorer with 69 goals, announced his retirement from international football on Monday.

In an emotional press conference at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo, the 37-year-old striker said that Uruguay’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay on Friday would be his last with the national team.

“Friday will be my last match with my country’s national team. It’s something I’ve been thinking about, I’ve been analyzing it. It’s the right time,” he said, adding that he will play with the same enthusiasm as he did during his debut in February 2007.

“I leave with the peace of mind that I gave everything for the national team until Friday…I have no regrets,” said Suarez, who played in four World Cups, won the Copa América in 2011 and was named the best player of the tournament.

Suárez also thanked his fans for their support over the years.

He clarified that he would not be available for the eight-round qualifier against Venezuela.

“Its my decision to retire and not because of injuries or because they stop calling me. That comforts me a lot,” said the former Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Nacional player.

He hoped that his final match would be “unforgettable” for him, his family and the spectators.

“I hope for a good celebration, for Uruguay to win, because it is still a qualifying match for three points and we have to take it seriously,” Suárez said. EFE
