New York, Jun 4 (EFE).-

American President Donald Trump banned travel to the United States from 12 countries Wednesday and partially restricted the entry of citizens of seven other nations citing national security concerns.

Trump signed the executive order on Wednesday banning the entry of immigrants from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen, and restricting entry from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.

The ban will be effective Monday, according to the order, which also said the state secretary would submit a report to the president within 90 days and every 180 days with his assessment and a recommendation on whether it should be continued, terminated, modified, or supplemented.

According to the president’s order, the 12 countries with a total ban “are deficient in screening and monitoring and pose a very high risk to the US.”

“We cannot allow open migration from any country where we cannot conduct safe and reliable screening and monitoring. That is why today I am signing a new executive order imposing travel restrictions on countries like Yemen, Somalia, Haiti, Libya, and many others,” the President said.

In a video on the White House’s X page, Trump said the recent incident in Colorado targeting Jews is an example of the “extreme” dangers posed to the US by the entry of foreigners who have not been properly vetted, as well as those who arrive here as temporary visitors and overstay their visas.

“In the 21st century, we have seen terrorist attack after terrorist attack perpetrated by foreigners who have overstayed their visas and who come from dangerous places around the world,” he said, blaming President Joe Biden for his “open-door policies.”

He said that because of this, there are now “millions and millions” of immigrants without legal status in the country and recalled that during his first term, he also issued travel bans – on Muslim nationals – “one of our most successful policies and key to preventing major foreign terrorist attacks on American soil.”

“We will not allow what happened in Europe to happen to the US,” he stated, adding that after returning in January to the White House, he asked the state secretary to conduct a security review of high-risk regions and make recommendations regarding threats to national security.

This included the large-scale presence of terrorists, lack of cooperation on visa security, the inability to verify travelers’ identities, and inadequate registration, among others.

The president said the list is subject to review based on material improvements, and that new countries may be added as threats emerge around the world. EFE rh/lds
