Alcatraz to reopen by Trump’s order!

Washington, May 4 (EFE).-

The United States President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he has ordered the reopening and expansion of maximum security prison Alcatraz, where he intends to house more criminals.

In a message on his Truth Social account, the president reported that he has ordered the Federal Bureau of Prisons, along with the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and the FBI, to work to reopen the maximum security prison that closed more than 60 years ago.

“We will no longer tolerate these repeat offenders who sow decay, bloodshed, and mayhem in our streets,” Trump said.

Located on Alcatraz Island off the coast of San Francisco, California, the maximum-security prison operated from 1934 to 1963.

The 2.01sqkm prison closed a year after three men escaped and disappeared, a story that has inspired several Hollywood films.

However, the BOP stated that the closure was due to high costs, with the prison costing between $3 and $5 million to maintain.

Since, Alcatraz has been one of San Francisco, California’s, biggest tourist attractions.

Trump had already suggested in January that Alcatraz should be reopened. The US president’s comments came after he signed an order to send immigrants with alleged criminal records to Guantanamo Bay.

In his Sunday address, the president also suggested that undocumented immigrants could be sent to Alcatraz when it reopens.

“We will not be held hostage by criminals, thugs, and judges who are afraid to do their jobs and allow us to deport criminals who entered our country illegally,” the US president said.

Trump has repeatedly complained about rulings that have prevented him from sending immigrants with alleged criminal records to the mega-prison Centro de Confinemiento del Terrorismo in El Salvador.

In March, the US sent more than 200 mostly Venezuelan immigrants to the prison, accusing them of belonging to the Tren de Aragua criminal gang. This has led to multiple lawsuits that have called the immigrants’ imprisonment unconstitutional. EF amv/lds
