Kylian Mbappe scored in his debut as Spanish giants Real Madrid beat Italian side Atalanta 2-0 in the European Super Cup final to win their sixth title in the tournament in Warsaw on Wednesday.
Federico Valverde opened the scoring for Madrid in the 59th minute after a great assist from Vinicius Junior, and Mbappe, who made his official debut as a Madrid player, sealing the title in the 68th minute.
Jude Bellingham provided the assist to Mbappe and was duly voted the Most Valuable Player for his contribution in the match.
Both teams started the game cautiously before Atalanta came close to a goal in the 25th minute when De Roon’s cross hit the crossbar after Eder Militao got his head to it.
Real had the chance to score before the break when Vinicius slipped in a good pass from the edge of the area, but Rodrygo’s left-footer smashed the crossbar.
Thibaut Courtois kept the Italians at bay when he saved Pasalie’s header at the start of the second half.
Madrid soon took control as Ferland Mendy won the ball back in the opposition half and combined with Bellingham, who found Vinicius racing past a defender, and slipped a perfect pass to the far post for Valverde to slot the ball home.
In the 68th minute, Mbappe received a perfect pass from Bellingham in the heart of the box and made no mistake, sending the ball into the top left corner. The goal all but secured another trophy for Madrid, sparking jubilation among the fans.
“It was a great night. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. To play in this shirt and with this crest for these fans. It’s a great moment for me,” Mbappe said after the match.
“Winning a title is very important because here we know that we always have to win,” he added.
Madrid will play Real Mallorca in their next match on Sunday as they begin their LaLiga title defense. EFE
