Modesto “Bob” Medina, 95, of Califon, NJ, passed away peacefully at home on March 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born on February 4, 1930, in Aguado de Pasajeros, Cuba, to the late Juan and Caridad Medina. He immigrated to the United States and met his wife in New York City. In the 1960s, they moved to Union City, NJ, to raise their family before settling in Guttenberg, NJ. Bob later lived in Ridgefield, NJ, and spent the past six years in Long Valley.

Bob had a distinguished career as a Director at The New York Times, overseeing the News Morgue and Picture Library. His gift for storytelling and natural charisma made him a respected figure in the industry. Throughout his career, he met numerous celebrities, politicians, and influential leaders, including Ed Sullivan, Marilyn Monroe, Reverend Al Sharpton, and Geraldo Rivera. His expertise in archiving and research extended beyond journalism—he contributed to the formation of the Holocaust Museum, assisted with the Kennedy family records, and helped incorporate articles and photos into the New York Public Library. His research efforts also played a role in books such as Men of Bronze and The Killing Fields, where he was credited for his contributions.

Outside of work, Bob was passionate about cooking, and his recipes were even featured in published cookbooks. He was especially known for his famous chili, which he generously donated to fundraisers—where it was always a crowd favorite. He was an avid collector of baseball cards, stamps, and coins, and a devoted Yankees fan. Bob also loved traveling, taking cruises with his late wife, Zaida, and bargaining with vendors along the way.
Bob is survived by his children: Robert “Bob” Medina (Patricia Campos-Medina), Lizzette Cabrera (Evelio), and Carlos Medina (Livin); his grandchildren: Mike, Ricky, Diego, Enrique, Elisa Minissale, and Marisol; his great-grandchildren: Luke, Doug, Dylan, and Julia; his best friend, Vincent Lupardi; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Bob’s Life Celebration will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Road, Chester, NJ. Visitation will take place from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a 4:00 PM funeral service. Final interment will be held privately by the family
