Messi scored and Luis Suarez finally broke his nine-match scoring drought to help Inter Miami, who had lost its last three matches, bounce back on Saturday with a resounding 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls in the MLS.

Javier Mascherano’s team was going through a difficult time after being eliminated in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup by the Vancouver Whitecaps, who defeated them at home (2-0) and away (1-3) for an embarrassing 5-1 aggregate defeat.

MLS was no relief either, as last weekend Inter Miami snapped its unbeaten league record after losing 3-4 to Dallas.

Inter Miami’s first goal was scored by Fafa Picault in the 9th minute with a headed assist from Suarez and Marcelo Weigandt made it 2-0 in the 30th minute.

Nine minutes later, Suarez shook off the burden of not having scored in nine matches to find the back of the net.

Goalkeeper Carlos Coronel had conceded three goals before halftime, but Mohammed Sofo struck in the 43rd minute for the Red Bulls to take the score to 3-1 before the break.

In the second half, Inter Miami sealed its win with a goal from Messi, his first in five matches.

Inter Miami has 21 points from 10 matches, placing them fourth in the Eastern Conference but with one game in hand over the Columbus Crew (24) and Philadelphia Union (22).

Cincinnati is third (22) and will visit New York City on Sunday while Inter Miami will face Minnesota United on May 10. EFE dvp/pd
