Real and Atlético 1-1
Sports Desk, Sep 29 (EFE).-
Sunday’s derby between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid at the Cívitas Metropolitano will be remembered less for the uninspiring 1-1 draw than for the 15-minute stoppage that followed after home fans threw objects at the visiting goalkeeper.
Referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer ordered the stoppage and sent the players to the dressing room after Atléti’s Fondo Sur supporters threw objects, including cigarette lighters, from the stands into the goal area, which was being defended by Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
At that point, after 68 minutes of play, Real led 1-0 after Brazil’s Éder Militão scored in the 64th minute with a powerful shot from inside the box following a delivery from compatriot Vinícius Júnior.
Atleti’s Ángel Correa leveled the scores deep into extra time with a goal that was initially disallowed for offside but was later awarded by the VAR.
The draw leaves Barcelona three points ahead of Real Madrid and five ahead of Atletico Madrid and marks the third consecutive derby in which Carlo Ancelotti’s men have failed to beat Diego Simeone’s side. EFE
