Intercontinental cup first winner was Real Madrid, which defeated Peñarol over two legs in the inaugural competition in 1960, thanks to a 5-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu and a goalless draw in the second leg at the Estadio Centenario in the Uruguayan capital.

Madrid’s second triumph came in the 1998 Intercontinental Cup in Japan, thanks to Raúl González’ strike against Vasco da Gama of Brazil (2-1), and their third one came in 2002 against Olimpia of Paraguay, thanks to the goals from Ronaldo Nazario and Guti (2-0).

However, the Meringue team has also been defeated in two finals, in 1966 by Peñarol, losing both games 2-0, and in the 2000 Intercontinental Cup by Boca Juniors, losing 2-1 with two goals for the Argentinians from Martín Palermo. EFE
