El hist\u00f3rico senador federal dem\u00f3crata Bob Men\u00e9ndez, que se encuentra en medio de un juicio por presunta corrupci\u00f3n y otros cargos, formaliz\u00f3 su ruptura con el partido y buscar\u00e1 la reelecci\u00f3n como independiente para un cuarto mandato en las elecciones del 5 de noviembre, seg\u00fan trascendi\u00f3 hoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eso significa que Men\u00e9ndez, un pol\u00edtico con vasta experiencia, pudo conseguir las 800 firmas m\u00ednimas que se requiere a un candidato al Senado por el estado de Nueva Jersey y tambi\u00e9n podr\u00e1 seguir recaudando fondos de campa\u00f1a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El pasado 22 de marzo Men\u00e9ndez, de origen cubano, anunci\u00f3 que no estar\u00eda en la lista de candidatos dem\u00f3cratas en las primarias de su partido, que se llevar\u00e1n a cabo este martes en Nueva Jersey, \u00faltimo d\u00eda que tiene tambi\u00e9n para presentar su candidatura independiente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al hacer el anuncio Men\u00e9ndez no descart\u00f3 aspirar de forma independiente para buscar la reelecci\u00f3n al Senado, continuando as\u00ed una carrera pol\u00edtica de tres d\u00e9cadas que tambi\u00e9n ha incluido su paso por la C\u00e1mara de Representantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El senador dem\u00f3crata por Nueva Jersey y su esposa Nadine Arslanian fueron imputados con 18 cargos, de los que se han declarado no culpables. Al legislador se le acus\u00f3 de aceptar sobornos a cambio de usar su influencia en favor del gobierno de Egipto y actuar como un agente extranjero para ese pa\u00eds, y posteriormente se le presentaron cargos por obstrucci\u00f3n a la justicia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En 2015, ya se le acus\u00f3 de 14 cargos de corrupci\u00f3n, pero el jurado no logr\u00f3 ponerse de acuerdo sobre su culpabilidad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
