El diario The New York Times (NYT), el medio digital con m\u00e1s suscriptores del mundo, ha ganado en el \u00faltimo trimestre unos 300.000 abonos m\u00e1s, una cifra modesta y que se apoya sobre todo en el contenido no period\u00edstico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los resultados trimestrales de uno de los peri\u00f3dicos m\u00e1s influyentes en Estados Unidos arrojan una cifra total de 10,6 millones de suscriptores, de los que 9,7 millones son de su edici\u00f3n digital, y estas suscripciones le han hecho superar por vez primera los 1.000 millones de d\u00f3lares en ingresos anuales, seg\u00fan comunic\u00f3 hoy la empresa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Otros medios de la competencia destacan sin embargo que los vitales ingresos por publicidad han bajado en el \u00faltimo trimestre de 2023 (-8,4 %), y se espera que sigan bajando, lo que ha hecho que el ingreso por usuario digital haya bajado a 9,24 d\u00f3lares, cuatro centavos menos que el trimestre previo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El NYT insiste en su apuesta por el contenido no period\u00edstico, como las secciones de pasatiempos de palabras -Wordle y Spelling Bee-, de recetas de cocina o de an\u00e1lisis de productos para el consumidor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En cuanto a los contenidos period\u00edsticos, el diario no cita entre las rentables a las secciones pol\u00edticas o los reportajes, que son probablemente las que le dan mejor reputaci\u00f3n, sino a la secci\u00f3n deportiva, pero reconoce que su apuesta por el deporte al comprar The Athletic (que a\u00fan mantiene su marca, alojada en la web del NYT) sigue sin ser rentable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concretamente, las p\u00e9rdidas operativas de The Athletic sumaron el a\u00f1o pasado 4,4 millones de d\u00f3lares (9,6 millones el a\u00f1o anterior), y sus ingresos crecieron hasta los 38,5 millones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El diario neoyorquino, que aventaja en varios millones de suscriptores a otros grandes medios como The Wall Street Journal (3,5 millones, seg\u00fan la web Statista.com) o The Washington Post (2,5 millones) se ha marcado como objetivo sumar 15 millones de suscriptores para 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pero el NYT reconoce hoy que toda la industria period\u00edstica se encuentra en estado de turbulencia, con diarios que optan por despidos de personal o por ofertas de venta: “Nuestro viento en contra incluye una baja en los lectores, que llegan a las noticias desde las redes sociales, un menor inter\u00e9s general en las noticias y un mercado dif\u00edcil para la publicidad”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
