Liverpool at top of the Premier League table.
London, Nov 10 (EFE) –
Martin Odegaard’s return raised Arsenal’s hopes against Chelsea, but the match ended in a 1-1 draw. It was far from the result the Gunners needed on Sunday to move closer to Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.
Arsenal remains nine points behind leaders Liverpool and four from Manchester City, but at least they showed signs of improvement.
The first half was tense, with both teams playing tightly together and not wanting to give anything away.
Malo Gusto’s header from a yard out and Martinelli’s close-range shot against Robert Sanchez could have made the difference.
So did Kai Havertz, who scored against his former team and celebrated by silencing the crowd, but the VAR ruled him offside and disallowed the goal, making his celebration moot.
For two months, Arsenal have been without Odegaard, who was sidelined with an ankle injury and returned to action this week.
Upon his return, the ‘8’ did not disappoint, setting up Martinelli for the 1-0. The Norweigan produced one of his classic passes to the far post and Chelsea’s poor marking did the rest.
Martinelli was unmarked, Robert’s cover was poor, and the Brazilian scored.
Chelsea responded when Enzo Fernandez, a substitute in four of the last five Premier League games, came on and played the ball into the path of Pedro Netro, who fired a low shot that Raya could do nothing about.
The draw is of little use for both teams, tied with 19 points in third and fourth place. EFE
