London, May 27 (EFE).-

Four people remain hospitalized in serious condition a day after a car ploughed into a crowd in Liverpool during a parade to celebrate the English club’s Premier League victory, the city’s mayor Steve Rotheram said Tuesday.

There are “still four people who are very, very ill in hospital,” Rotheram told BBC.

“We are hoping of course that they pull through,” he added.

A 53-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was arrested after the incident on Water Street in the heart of the city.

A total of 47 people were injured, many of whom were treated at the scene, according to the police, who described it as an isolated incident and not a terrorist attack.

To avoid speculation about the identity of the perpetrator, Merseyside Police in northwest England said the driver of the car was a white British man from the Liverpool area.

It is believed that the police decided to release details of the suspect to avoid a repeat of last year’s riots in England following a knife attack on several girls at a dance studio in Southport in northwest England.

Three young girls were killed after 18-year-old Axel Rudakubana attacked them with a knife.

The police’s delay in providing details about Rudakubana led far-right groups to start riots following social media reports claiming the attacker was an asylum seeker, when in fact he was British with Rwandan parents.

Regarding the incident in Liverpool, videos posted on social media show the crowd trying to chase the driver by smashing the rear window of the car.

Officers quickly surrounded the car while several people tried to stop the driver, who was arrested by police.

Thousands of people gathered on Monday, a holiday in the United Kingdom, in the streets of the northwestern English city for the parade celebrating Liverpool’s title win, which the team’s players celebrated for several hours on an open-top bus. EFE vg/pd
