A Reflection on Nine Years of Success: By Dr. Connie Sánchez

Morristown, New Jersey:

In an age where digital devices are omnipresent, the decision to implement a cellphone-free policy in schools might seem counterintuitive to some. However, at Unity Charter School, we made this choice nine years ago, and the results have been nothing short of transformative. Our journey toward a cellphone-free environment has not only shaped our students’ academic and social development but has also strengthened our school’s commitment to holistic education. As educators, we often face difficult decisions, but this has proven to be one of our most rewarding.

Fostering Engagement and Presence

One of the most significant long-term impacts of maintaining a cellphone-free environment is the enhanced social and cognitive engagement of our students. Without the constant distraction of their phones, students are more present, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. They are more attuned to the lessons being taught, more connected to their peers, and more immersed in the learning experience that is taking place in the classrooms daily.

As we walk through classrooms, we see students who are fully engaged with the material and each other. They collaborate, communicate, and contribute in ways that are deep and meaningful. Discipline infractions have decreased, as have unnecessary visits to the bathroom and water fountain, small but telling indicators of reduced distractions. We have fewer students looking down at their laps or into their desks during class, and more attention is being given to the teacher and each other. The classrooms are more vibrant.

Aligning with Our Educational Mission

At Unity Charter School, our mission is rooted in constructivist, hands-on learning. We believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged in their education, constructing knowledge through experience and reflection. The absence of cellphones enhances this approach, allowing students to immerse themselves fully in their activities without the pull of digital distractions.

This policy also aligns with the principles of Alfred Adler, whose work emphasizes the importance of community and belonging. By removing cellphones from the equation, we’ve created an environment where students feel more connected to one another and their teachers, fostering a sense of community that is essential for healthy development.

Moreover, our commitment to holistic education is reflected in this policy. We strive to educate the whole child: intellectually, emotionally, socially, and physically. By encouraging students to be fully present in their learning, we help them develop the focus and interpersonal skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

Overcoming Challenges and Supporting Families

Of course, implementing and maintaining a cellphone-free policy has not been without its challenges. One of the most significant has been addressing the valid concerns of families worried about their children’s safety. We understand these concerns and have taken steps to ensure that students can still contact their families when necessary. Classroom and office phones are always available, and students are encouraged to use them if they need to reach their parents.

Additionally, in the event of a school-wide emergency, limiting cellphone use helps prevent the overwhelming of emergency lines, ensuring that accurate information can be communicated quickly and effectively to first responders. This approach has reassured parents while maintaining the integrity of our cellphone-free environment.

Building a Positive School Culture

The absence of cellphones has had a profound impact on our school culture. Without the distraction of screens, students are more likely to engage in age-appropriate play and social interactions. We see this not just in the classroom, but also on our many field trips, where students are fully immersed in the experience.  When we chaperone we see children interacting with exhibits, talking to each other, or simply playing games like leapfrog that allow them to be kids.

For our teachers, the policy has provided peace of mind. They no longer have to worry about what students might be accessing on their phones during class, allowing them to focus on building deeper connections with their students and enhancing the quality of their teaching.

Supporting Digital Literacy and Future Success

While our school is cellphone-free, we are by no means disconnected from the digital world. Every student at Unity Charter School is issued a Chromebook, and we are a one-to-one school, ensuring that all students have access to the resources and programs they need to develop essential 21st-century skills. Our curriculum integrates age-appropriate technology lessons, helping students learn responsible digital use without the distractions that cellphones can bring.  This year we are integrating artificial intelligence (AI) use into our curriculum and teaching children its value and how to understand it and use it effectively. Our students are not, by any means, behind in digital literacy.

This approach prepares our students for life beyond the classroom by cultivating self-regulation, focus, and strong interpersonal skills. These are the very skills that will help them succeed in higher education and the workforce, where the ability to manage one’s attention and communicate effectively is increasingly valued.

Feedback and Future Directions

When we first implemented the cellphone-free policy, there was understandable concern from some parents. However, as the years have passed, and the benefits have become evident, these concerns have largely dissipated. The policy is now a well-established part of our school culture, trusted and supported by parents, students, and teachers alike.

As we look to the future, we remain committed to balancing the need for digital literacy with the goal of minimizing distractions. By continuing to provide students with the tools and guidance they need to navigate the digital world responsibly, we believe we can prepare them for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Conclusion

Our experience at Unity Charter School has shown that a cellphone-free environment can have profound and lasting benefits for students’ academic, social, and emotional development. It is a policy that aligns with our educational mission, supports our commitment to holistic education, and fosters a positive and engaged school culture.  The road to a cellphone-free school may not be without its challenges, but in our experience, it is a journey well worth taking. The rewards- engaged students, supportive teachers, and a cohesive school community are truly invaluable.
