“No need to respond” Trump’s 25% Tariff War!
Mexico City, Mar 6 (EFE).-
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Thursday that following the agreement reached with her United States counterpart Donald Trump to postpone the 25% tariffs on Mexican products for a month, there was no need to respond.

Asked during her morning press conference about the tensions caused by Trump’s threat to impose tariffs and the risk of losing investments, the Mexican president’s confirmed that “there is no longer any point in talking about measures to reduce this uncertainty since everything was delayed up until Apr. 2.”
When the US announced the 25% tariffs on Mexican products on Mar. 4, Sheinbaum predicted that the country would respond to in a great event at the Zócalo in Mexico City on Mar. 9.

“If the tariffs had stayed in place, we would have had to respond on Sunday. In a way, that’s what I said to President Trump when I told him: ‘I have to respond to my people because that’s my main obligation,'” she said.
Sheinbaum said Mexico must move forward to strengthen its sovereignty and self-sufficiency.
According to her, the country needs to produce more to consume more domestically.

“This will not only help us in terms of growth. For us, it is not growth, it means economic development with prosperity. We need to produce more here because we also import a lot from other regions,” the Mexican leader said.
The energy sector is one of the industries to be enhanced as “this will make our country even stronger,” as well as promoting food self-sufficiency and production, she added.

Tariffs are a particular concern for Mexico as the US is its largest trading partner, with exports reaching 490 billion dollars in 2023, almost 30% of Mexico’s gross domestic product, according to the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO). EFE
