Washington, Aug 30 (EFE). –

Ovidio Guzmán López, son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Illinois on Oct. 1, despite reports of his release, a United States Department of Justice source confirmed to EFE on Friday.

The Mexican newspaper El Universal reported that Guzman Lopez, 34, also known as “El Ratón” (The Mouse), had reached an agreement with the Drug Enforcement Agency to be part of its protected witness program, according to a Drug Enforcement Agency source cited by the newspaper.

Mexico’s attorney general’s office also said Thursday that the son of “El Chapo” had been released from prison following the capture of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López, Ovidio’s brother, in New Mexico last month.

However, Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Rosa Icela Rodriguez, said the US Embassy reported that Guzmán López had not been released, but that there had been “a change in precautionary measures.”

The Mexican Army arrested Ovidio Guzmán López in Sinaloa on Jan. 5, 2023. He was extradited to the US in September after being named one of Washington’s most wanted drug traffickers for his involvement in the fentanyl trade.

The Justice Department filed charges against him in three different federal districts for allegedly assuming leadership of the Sinaloa cartel after his father’s arrest and subsequent extradition, also convicted of drug trafficking.

Three other brothers of Guzmán López, including Joaquín, were also included in the indictments. EFE
