Brian Thompson, shot dead in Manhattan!
New York, US, Dec 4 (EFE).-
The chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, the largest private health insurer in the United States, Brian Thompson, died Wednesday after being shot near a hotel in midtown Manhattan, authorities said.
“In midtown Manhattan early this morning, 50-year-old Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed in what appears at this early stage of our investigation to be a targeted attack,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference.
UnitedHealthcare, part of UnitedHealth Group, was holding its annual investor meeting at the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel to update shareholders on the company’s outlook and expectations for the coming year when Thompson was shot just outside the building. The conference has since been canceled.
NYC Mayor Eric Adams told reporters that the killing appeared to be targeted, saying, “We want to be clear to New Yorkers that this does not appear to be a random act of violence.”
The killing took place around 6:40 am local time in a high-traffic area of the city with busy office buildings and tourist sites such as the Moma Museum, which is half a block away.
Part of the block where the shooting took place was cordoned off with police tape as the search continued for the gunman, who fled the scene.
Police released a surveillance image showing a person wearing a black hoodie and backpack pointing a gun. EFE
