Pasadena, California, Jun 23 (EFE).-

Atletico de Madrid crashed out Monday of the Club World Cup despite beating a demanding Botafogo 1-0 with a goal from Frenchman Antoine Griezmann, who had not scored since late February.

The Frenchman’s goal, however, was not enough to seal the Red and Whites’ place in the round of 16, as they needed to win by three goals or more to go through.

Diego Simeone’s men ceded the round of 16 spots to Paris Saint-Germain and Botafogo in Group B, after the Parisians defeated Seattle Sounders 2-0.

Elsewhere, two Palmeiras goals in the final 10 minutes negated a display by Luis Suarez, who scored one goal and created another in the 2-2 draw between Inter Miami and the Brazilians, which qualified both teams for the next round.

Goals from Paulinho in the 80th minute and Allan in the 88th minute left Palmeiras first in the group with five points thanks to goal difference. Inter Miami finishes with the same number of points but in second place.

The Brazilians will play Botafogo on Saturday in Philadelphia, while Inter Miami will play Paris Saint-Germain a day later in Atlanta.

Porto and Al Ahly drew 4-4 in the final match of Group A, in a match that was pure madness and entertainment for the spectators, but both teams were eliminated from the competition. EFE mvg/lds
