Several Russian skaters and coaches were on board the American passenger plane that collided with a military helicopter in Washington on Wednesday, Russian state media and Kremlin said.

“According to preliminary reports, skaters Spencer Lane, Gina Khan, Edward Zhou, sisters Everly and Alydia Livingston, Franco Aparicio, Sean Kay, Angela Yang, as well as coaches Vadim Naumov, Eugenia Shishkova, Inna Volyanskaya and another ice dance coach were on board the plane,” Russian state agency TASS reported.

American figure skater Jon Maravilla told Russian state-owned news agency RIA Novosti that there were 14 skaters on board the plane, not counting coaches and their families.

Maravilla said he was unable to get on the flight because his dog was not allowed on board, and opted to travel by car.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also confirmed the presence of Russian citizens on board.

“We see, unfortunately, that this sad information is confirmed. Our other compatriots were also there. Bad news from Washington today,” he told reporters.

The spokesperson extended his condolences to the families and friends of the Russians who lost their lives in the crash.

When asked if Russian President Vladimir Putin would offer condolences to his American counterpart Donald Trump, Peskov said that there were no plans for high-level contacts for now.

A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet, with 67 passengers on board, collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 ​​military helicopter at 9 pm on Wednesday while approaching Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The Washington DC Police Department is conducting a search and rescue operation in the Potomac River, into which both aircraft fell after the crash. EFE
